With its $500 million expansion project, the 1.1-million-square-foot Westfield UTC mall in La Jolla grew by 395,000 square feet of retail space and needed a way to visually connect the expansive space and disparate storefronts with shops ranging from ecco to Shake Shack to Victoria’s Secret. Using a unifying floral pattern, California Sheet Metal manufactured shades to stretch over main thoroughfares, columns supporting awnings, panels to line over-street walkways, and climbing walls for clinging ivy. The common design element — incorporated in unique and different ways — brings the entire outdoor space together across its million-plus square feet.
