Architect Frank Gehry designed a 1,130,000 sq. ft. mixed use center with commercial, retail, cultural and residential units adjacent from his project, Walt Disney Concert Hall on Grand Ave Arts Corridor. There’s 164,000 sq. ft. of retail space and the residential towers will achieve LEED silver certification.

On the residential 39 story high rise, CSM did general sheet metal and exterior metal panel cladding system work. 3/16” Aluminum panels were installed in residential towers and the hotel with radius panels on the bridge. There is also 1/8” aluminum panel cladding along the sides of 6 escalators and 3/16” aluminum panel cladding at the elevator openings in the podium area.

The roof and parapet consist of copings and flashings. There are radius metal panels at the grand staircase, podium and bridges. With 46,246 field installation work hours and 22,597 shop fabrication work hours, multiple mockups were done during the design development. CSM implemented 3D scanning and modeling to seamlessly install 127 1/8” aluminum tab and slot panels at the slab level of the podium. This led to a well executed grand staircase. A curved staircase requires great care to detail since it is not plumb. At the top of the staircase, there are 59 different flat plate copings and a custom handrail that runs down panels which were laid out in a manner to ensure the rail wasn’t placed on joints.

California Sheet Metal’s work on this site was recently awarded the 2023 Tom Guilfoy Memorial Award for Craftsmanship in the Architectural category. This annual award is given to projects that demand not only an exceptional attention to detail, but also an extraordinary level of communication and collaboration between all parties.
