California Sheet Metal (CSM) fabricated and installed over 116,000 square feet of panels as part of the modernization of San Diego International Airport’s Terminal 1. The scope involved coordinating with multi-trade teams, engineering custom solutions to encapsulate complex MEP systems and constructing a new Smart Curb system.
Architectural Column Covers
CSM produced over 63,000 square feet of panels to build 265 architectural column covers large enough to fully encapsulate and coordinate the airport’s complex MEP systems within each structural column. During design development, CSM provided detailed mockups that informed the final MEP coordination. This collaborative effort ensured seamless integration between trades, preserving a clean, modern aesthetic alongside complex building systems.
Smart Curb System
CSM delivered precision fabrication for the terminal’s new Smart Curb, a high-traffic buffer zone connecting the parking structure, main access roads, and the terminal entry. This area required durable, large-scale panel systems capable of maintaining both structural integrity and architectural consistency. CSM fabricated and installed over 2,000 individual panels for the Smart Curb, totaling more than 53,000 square feet.
Delivery & Community Impact
Since welcoming its first scheduled flight in September 2025, the San Diego International Airport’s Terminal 1 has already served more than five million passengers.
