For the fifth time, CSM has been proudly awarded the Tom Guilfoy Memorial Craftsmanship Award for our work on The Grand LA.
The Frank Gehry-designed project sits opposite the Walt Disney Concert Hall at the center of Grand Ave Arts Corridor — part of the USGBC registered block fully designed by Gehry to encourage a creative communal hub. Standing tall with 164,000 sq. ft. of retail space and residential towers that is expected to receive LEED silver certification, the project required 46,246 field installation work hours and 22,597 shop fabrication work hours.
Amongst its many standout attributes, of particular complexity was the Grand Staircase referenced in the Guilfoy Award announcement by CAL SMACNA.
“The staircase is curved with many components that were not plumb,” the award announcement called out. “The design development required multiple mock-ups, 3D scanning and modeling in order to achieve the use of the panel system installed on the staircase, which consisted of 127 different panels.”
